Sri Lanka Rally 2020 | Day 13 | Sigiriya to Trincomalee | Bespoke Rallies

On our route today we began with a meander around some very narrow roads along a river until we reached a large reservoir along side the entrance to Polonnaruwa archeological site. This site is the royal ancient city of the Kingdom of Polonnaruwa and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It covers a vast area and remains one of the best planned archaeological relic cities in Sri Lanka. We drove through the site stopping at various temples and monuments en route.

Soon after leaving the site we stopped at a wood carving workshop where they demonstrated how rainbow wood was used to produce natural paints, changing its colour by altering the acid/alkaline levels.

We eventually rejoined the main road to the coast, passing numerous army camps and road blocks – a result of the civil war over 20 years ago.

Finally we arrived at our hotel in Trincomallee. A beautiful beach hotel on the ocean front. Tomorrow being a rest day when we can relax and enjoy the palm lined beach and warm sea.
