SALTILLO to ALICE – Thursday 22nd March
Adrian, Barbara, Ronald and Ann had an early 6.30am start as the had to return their two hire cars to Reynosa – Barbara reported that ‘the road from Monterrey to Reynosa was spookily quiet’ but they arrived safely and they managed to get a taxi over the US border to McAllen airport before hiring another two cars.
It was a misty morning as we took the Autopista north, up into the mountains towards the US border. The border was 293km away and it took us 3 hours to get there and start the process of exiting Mexico – at one point we had to park in the four lanes of traffic queuing over the bridge, and rush across the road to get our passports stamped! We then queued in the four lines of traffic over the bridge into the Laredo ‘fan’, and having shouldered a broken down truck out of the way, made it through to the USA.
The landscape all the way to Alice was very flat, from horizon to horizon and the scrub trees, yucca and bushes gradually gave way to huge neatly ploughed or newly seeded fields. That night we stayed at the Hampton Inn and dined at Chillies, across the road, and their Baby Rack-of-Ribs was so large, it would have fed a small family!
