GALVESTON to NEW ORLEANS – Saturday 24th March

The final day of an amazing journey! A few kilometres from the hotel we caught the Galveston ferry across to Bolivar and then continued on along the coast.  We had 593km to cover that day and much of the route was along the beach and through the southern waterlogged bayou’s of Texas and Louisiana.  The land was so flat one felt that the sea was only inches lower than the road and all the houses were built on tall stilts, which tells its own story!!

We took the Holly Beach Ferry in Cameron and saw a dolphin being escorted by a police boat for its protection and on the other side found the Anchor’s Up Grill which served up local shrimp or soft shell crab Po’boys and fried pickles!!  Delicious!!  We continued on through the wetlands seeing flocks of herons and other birds before heading in land and taking the expressway to New Orleans.

There was a wonderful welcome awaiting everyone at the Hotel Monteleone as we toasted the end of an epic  7,955km journey (4,972 miles), encompassing 8 countries in 31 days. Jamie had put together an excellent 15 minute film of the trip which we viewed that evening at dinner and it was a wonderful reminder of the places we had visited and the trials and tribulations along the way.   It wouldn’t have been the same without the super group of people who had made the trip and been such fun to be with.  I hope we all meet again and thank you for a great time!  Hasta pronto!
